Psalm 20 — May Yahweh Answer You in the Day of Trouble
Unusual among the psalms in its direct address: rather than David speaking to God, this is the people (or a worship leader) speaking blessing over the king before battle — "may Yahweh answer you in the day of trouble" (v. 1). It moves through a series of requests for the king's success before landing on the psalm's clearest line: "some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust the name of Yahweh our God" (v. 7) — a statement of where confidence is actually placed, made explicit by contrast with the era's most obvious military assets.
- This psalm functions as a liturgy — words meant to be said by a group for someone else's benefit — rather than personal prayer, which is part of why its structure differs from most surrounding psalms.
- Verse 7's chariots-and-horses contrast isn't a claim that military preparation is wrong; it's a claim about where ultimate trust belongs, especially relevant given that Israel's kings were later explicitly warned against building up horses for their own security (Deuteronomy 17:16).
- The psalm's confidence in verses 6-8 is stated before any outcome is known — "now I know that Yahweh saves" is asserted in advance of the battle, not after a victory report.

1May Yahweh answer you in the day of trouble. May the name of the God of Jacob set you up on high,
2send you help from the sanctuary, grant you support from Zion,
3remember all your offerings, and accept your burned sacrifice. Selah.
4May He grant you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your counsel.
5We will triumph in your salvation. In the name of our God, we will set up our banners. May Yahweh grant all your requests.
6Now I know that Yahweh saves his anointed. He will answer him from his holy heaven, with the saving strength of his right hand.
7Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust the name of Yahweh our God.
8They are bowed down and fallen, but we rise up, and stand upright.
9Save, Yahweh! Let the King answer us when we call!
