Psalm 26 — Judge Me, Yahweh, for I Have Walked in My Integrity
David opens with an unusual request: not for mercy, but for scrutiny — "examine me, Yahweh, and prove me; try my heart and my mind" (v. 2). What follows is a description of deliberate distance from wrongdoing — refusing to sit with "deceitful men" or "the assembly of evildoers" (vv. 4-5) — paired with deliberate closeness to worship, washing his hands "in innocence" before going to the altar (v. 6). The request throughout is to be judged by the actual pattern of his life, not simply spared judgment.
- The request to be "tried" (v. 2) only makes sense as a confident appeal in a specific dispute, similar to Psalm 17 — it isn't a general claim to sinlessness, but an appeal against particular accusers in view later (v. 9's "bloodthirsty men").
- Verses 4-5's separation from "deceitful men" and "hypocrites" describes chosen company, not isolation from people in general — the same psalm ends with worship "in the congregations" (v. 12), a public, communal act.
- Washing hands "in innocence" (v. 6) before approaching the altar echoes the physical washing priests performed before service (Exodus 30:19-21) — David applies ritual language to moral condition, not just ceremonial procedure.

3For your loving kindness is before my eyes. I have walked in your truth.
4I have not sat with deceitful men, neither will I go in with hypocrites.
5I hate the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.
6I will wash my hands in innocence, so I will go about your altar, Yahweh;
7that I may make the voice of thanksgiving to be heard, and tell of all your wondrous deeds.
8Yahweh, I love the habitation of your house, the place where your glory dwells.
9Don’t gather my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men;
10in whose hands is wickedness, their right hand is full of bribes.
11But as for me, I will walk in my integrity. Redeem me, and be merciful to me.
12My foot stands in an even place. In the congregations I will bless Yahweh.
