Psalm 28 — My Rock, Don't Be Deaf to Me
A short psalm that pivots hard partway through, from urgent request to settled praise, without narrating what changed in between — a pattern seen already in Psalm 13. David opens fearing silence from God ("don't be deaf to me... lest I become like those who go down into the pit," v. 1) and asks for justice against "workers of iniquity" who "speak peace... but mischief is in their hearts" (v. 3). By verse 6, without transition, he's already praising God for having heard him, and the psalm closes widening from personal request to a prayer for the whole nation (v. 9).
- Verse 3's description of the wicked — speaking peace while harboring mischief — targets deception specifically, people whose danger lies in the gap between what they say and what they intend, not open hostility.
- The shift from plea (vv. 1-5) to praise (vv. 6-9) happens exactly at the midpoint with no stated cause — like Psalm 13, this is usually read as a decision to trust rather than a report that circumstances changed.
- Verse 9's closing request to "be their shepherd also, and bear them up forever" reuses shepherd language (compare Psalm 23) but applies it to the whole people rather than one individual — personal trust widening into corporate hope.

1To you, Yahweh, I call. My rock, don’t be deaf to me; lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit.
2Hear the voice of my petitions, when I cry to you, when I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.
3Don’t draw me away with the wicked, with the workers of iniquity who speak peace with their neighbors, but mischief is in their hearts.
4Give them according to their work, and according to the wickedness of their doings. Give them according to the operation of their hands. Bring back on them what they deserve.
5Because they don’t respect the works of Yahweh, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.
6Blessed be Yahweh, because he has heard the voice of my petitions.
7Yahweh is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank him.
8Yahweh is their strength. He is a stronghold of salvation to his anointed.
9Save your people, and bless your inheritance. Be their shepherd also, and bear them up forever.
