Psalm 52 — You Trusted in the Abundance of Your Riches

A short, pointed psalm confronting someone (traditionally read as Doeg the Edomite, who betrayed David to Saul in 1 Samuel 22) whose power comes from a "deceitful tongue" rather than integrity — "your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully" (v. 2). Against that, David sets his own security: not wealth or cleverness, but being "like a green olive tree in God's house" (v. 8), an image of steady, rooted growth rather than the sudden uprooting predicted for the boastful man in verse 5.

What to watch for
  • Verse 7's description of the target — someone who "trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness" — names the specific error: treating wealth and cunning as a substitute for genuine security.
  • The olive tree image (v. 8) contrasts deliberately with the uprooting language of verse 5 ("pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land") — one image is forcibly removed, the other is planted and growing.
  • David's response to betrayal here is neither retaliation nor despair but redirected trust — the psalm's second half (vv. 8-9) shifts entirely away from the accused man toward David's own posture before God.

Psalms 52 (WEB)

1Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man? God’s loving kindness endures continually.

2Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

3You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking the truth. Selah.

4You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue.

5God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

6The righteous also will see it, and fear, and laugh at him, saying,

7“Behold, this is the man who didn’t make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.”

8But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God’s house. I trust in God’s loving kindness forever and ever.

9I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it. I will hope in your name, for it is good, in the presence of your saints.
