Psalm 30 — Weeping May Stay for the Night, but Joy Comes in the Morning

A thanksgiving psalm looking back on a specific reversal — David recalls being "raised up" from what sounds like serious illness or near-death ("you have brought up my soul from Sheol," v. 3) — and along the way admits a failure that preceded it: in prosperity he had said "I shall never be moved" (v. 6), a false confidence that God's favor made him untouchable. The turn from that overconfidence, through crisis, to genuine thanksgiving is the psalm's real arc, summarized in its best-known line: "weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning" (v. 5).

What to watch for
  • Verse 6's confession — "I said in my prosperity, I shall never be moved" — is presented as the problem, not the solution; the psalm treats comfortable self-assurance as something God's hidden face (v. 7) directly corrected.
  • Verse 9's argument to God ("what profit is there in my destruction... shall the dust praise you?") is a common bargaining move in the psalms of lament — appealing to God's own interest in being praised as a reason for deliverance, not just appealing to pity.
  • The heading traditionally associates this psalm with the dedication of David's house — worth noting because the content is about personal crisis and healing rather than architecture, suggesting the "house" occasion became an opportunity to reflect on an earlier deliverance.

Psalms 30 (WEB)

1I will extol you, Yahweh, for you have raised me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me.

2Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.

3Yahweh, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

4Sing praise to Yahweh, you saints of his. Give thanks to his holy name.

5For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

6As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”

7You, Yahweh, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.

8I cried to you, Yahweh. I made supplication to the Lord:

9“What profit is there in my destruction, if I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise you? Shall it declare your truth?

10Hear, Yahweh, and have mercy on me. Yahweh, be my helper.”

11You have turned my mourning into dancing for me. You have removed my sackcloth, and clothed me with gladness,

12To the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to you forever!
