Psalm 46 — Be Still, and Know That I Am God
A psalm of confidence built directly against worst-case imagery: even if the earth itself gives way, mountains fall into the sea, and waters roar (vv. 1-3) — all standard ancient symbols of total cosmic collapse — "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (v. 1) still holds. It moves from that natural chaos to political chaos ("the nations raged, the kingdoms were moved," v. 6) to God's direct command in the first person: "be still, and know that I am God" (v. 10), closing on the repeated refrain "Yahweh of Armies is with us" (vv. 7, 11).
- Verse 10's "be still, and know that I am God" is often read devotionally as private, calming advice, but in context it's addressed to raging nations (v. 6) — closer to a command for warring powers to stop and recognize who's actually in control than personal relaxation advice.
- This psalm is the direct basis for Martin Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," one of the most influential hymns built on a single psalm's central image.
- The refrain in verses 7 and 11 ("Yahweh of Armies is with us") frames the whole psalm — whatever collapses around them, the point isn't that nothing bad happens, but that God's presence remains constant through it.
Psalms 46 (WEB)
1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas;
3though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.
4There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tents of the Most High.
5God is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn.
6The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted his voice, and the earth melted.
7Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8Come, see Yahweh’s works, what desolations he has made in the earth.
9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots in the fire.
10“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
11Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
