Psalm 47 — God Reigns Over the Nations

A short, energetic hymn calling all nations — not just Israel — to celebrate God's kingship: "clap your hands, all you nations, shout to God with the voice of triumph" (v. 1). Its central claim, repeated with variation throughout, is that Yahweh isn't merely Israel's God but "a great King over all the earth" (v. 2) who "reigns over the nations" (v. 8) even though the "princes of the peoples" gathering in verse 9 are specifically identified with "the God of Abraham" — a universal claim made from within a specific covenant relationship.

What to watch for
  • The command in verse 1 addresses "all you nations," not just Israel — an unusual scope for a psalm this early in the collection, anticipating a theme that grows stronger later in the Psalter and in the prophets (compare Isaiah 2:2-3).
  • Verse 5's "God has gone up with a shout... with the sound of a trumpet" likely describes a real liturgical procession (the ark being carried up to Zion) that the psalm uses as the occasion for its larger claim about universal kingship.
  • Verse 9's linking "the princes of the peoples" with "the God of Abraham" suggests a vision where other nations don't get their own separate relationship with God but are joined to the one already established through Abraham — inclusion rather than parallel tracks.

Psalms 47 (WEB)

1Oh clap your hands, all you nations. Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

2For Yahweh Most High is awesome. He is a great King over all the earth.

3He subdues nations under us, and peoples under our feet.

4He chooses our inheritance for us, the glory of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5God has gone up with a shout, Yahweh with the sound of a trumpet.

6Sing praises to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our King, sing praises.

7For God is the King of all the earth. Sing praises with understanding.

8God reigns over the nations. God sits on his holy throne.

9The princes of the peoples are gathered together, the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted!
