Bible Verses About Encouragement

Encouragement in the New Testament is mostly something believers are told to give each other, daily — Hebrews 3:13 says 'day by day,' not once in a while.

There are two kinds of encouragement verses. Some speak encouragement directly to the reader — God 'among you,' rejoicing over you, the God of all comfort. Others are instructions: build each other up, exhort one another daily, don't give up meeting together. 2 Corinthians 1:4 ties the two together: the comfort received is meant to be passed on to someone else in their own trouble.

Questions about encouragement

What is a good Bible verse to encourage someone?

Zephaniah 3:17 and Deuteronomy 31:6 are both short, personal and easy to send: one pictures God rejoicing over a person, the other promises he will not fail or forsake them. For someone grieving, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 speaks of the God of all comfort.

Does the Bible tell Christians to encourage each other?

Repeatedly. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says to build each other up, Hebrews 3:13 says to do it 'day by day,' and Hebrews 10:24-25 ties it to meeting together rather than going it alone.

Is Romans 8:28 a promise that everything will turn out fine?

Not in the sense of every situation ending well. Paul says all things 'work together for good' for those who love God — a claim about purpose running through events, written in a chapter that also lists suffering, hunger and danger as real.
