For the four weeks before Christmas — at the candle, the table or the day's reading
An Advent Prayer
A short prayer for the waiting weeks of Advent, written to be prayed at the lighting of a candle or before the day's Advent reading.
Lord, in these short days and long nights, we wait for you.
You promised light to people who walked in darkness. Where our lives are dim — tired, anxious, grieving, busy — let that light reach us again.
Slow us down enough to notice you coming. Make room in us the way there was no room at the inn.
Give us hope while we wait, peace while it is noisy, joy that does not depend on everything going well, and love that reaches past our own table.
Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.”
